PASTOR DAVID COOKE: The Heart of the Mater
Romans 1: 8-17
I. First, Prayer
A. Story
1. The Ten Disciplines becoming the Eleven Disciplines
2. The Essential Essentials
• Forgetting prayer
B. Thankfulness
“First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because
your faith is proclaimed in all the world.” (Romans 1:8, ESV)
C. Awareness / Remembrance
“For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of
his Son, that without ceasing I mention you” (Romans 1:9, ESV)
D. Pleading
“always in my prayers, asking that somehow by God’s will I may
now at last succeed in coming to you.” (Romans 1:10, ESV)
II. People You Should Trust
A. Paul’s Intentions Are Clear
1. Impart Grace
“For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to
strengthen you— that is, that we may be mutually encouraged by
each other’s faith, both yours and mine.” (Romans 1:11–12, ESV)
2. Receive Support
“I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that I have often intended to come to you (but thus far have been prevented), in order
that I may reap some harvest among you as well as among the rest of
the Gentiles.” (Romans 1:13, ESV)
3. Proclaim Good News
“I am under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to
the wise and to the foolish. So I am eager to preach the gospel to you
also who are in Rome.” (Romans 1:14–15, ESV)
III. The Heart of the Matter
A. Powerful, Not Power-less
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for
salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the
Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for
faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”” (Romans
1:16–17, ESV)
“for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and selfcontrol.” (2 Timothy 1:7, ESV)
Ephesians 1:16–20 (ESV)
1. The Gospel gives boldness
2. The Gospel is powerful to save
3. The Gospel is for all
4. The Gospel reveals the path to the best life
5. Faith (belief) is the key that unlocks the benefits and riches of the
Gospel.

This Week Romans 1:8-17
1. If you were to rate yourself on a scale of 1 to 10 (with 1 being
weak, 10 being strong), what number would you give yourself in
the area of prayer?
2. Read verses 8 -10. What do you notice about how Paul prayed?
Paul starts with Thanksgiving; how can you be more intentional
in this area of prayer in your life? What are three things you are
thankful for about someone else?
3. The letter of Romans is a lot about Paul building relationship and
trust between himself and the Roman church. What things are
necessary for trust to be built between people?
4. In verses 11-15 Pastor David identified three intentions of Paul –
Imparting grace, Receiving support, Proclaiming Good News.
How do those things build relationship and trust?
5. Verses 16-17 are the summary of the whole of the letter to the
Roman church. Why are these verses so important?
6. Paul emphasizes the power of the gospel here in these verses, as
he does elsewhere. Read 2 Timothy 1:7 and Ephesians 1:16-20.
Why is power so important and what is this power he is talking
about?
7. Where have you seen the power of God show up? Where do you
need the power of God to show up?
8. Do as Paul did, take time to pray for the power of God for yourself, someone else and for Cold Springs Church.
