Beyond Survival – What Do Young People Want & Need?

What do young people truly want and need in order to thrive rather than merely survive?

This message explores the deep longing young people have to be seen, known, and valued, and the critical role adults play in encouraging and empowering them through real relationships. Rather than offering solutions from a distance, the call is to step directly into the lives of young people—to “step into their boat,” engaging with what they are already navigating.

Through Jesus’ interactions with Peter, we see a consistent pattern: Jesus meets people where they are, invites them into a bigger purpose, and restores them when they fail. Encouragement is not simply affirmation—it is helping young people see a greater why and a bigger picture for their lives rooted in God’s calling.

Empowering young people also requires time, presence, and patience. Restoration is central to this process, as seen in Jesus’ recommissioning of Peter after failure. Adults are uniquely positioned to model faith, speak identity, and walk alongside the next generation so they can grow in confidence, purpose, and resilience as disciples of Jesus.
