PASTOR DAVID COOKE: Actions Have Consequences
Romans 2: 1-29
• What’s Your Excuse? (Romans 2.1 ESV)
“Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who
judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself,
because you, the judge, practice the very same things.” (Romans
2:1, ESV)
• Who Gets To Judge? (Romans 2.2-3 ESV)
“Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you
know that we who teach will be judged with greater
strictness.” (James 3:1, ESV)
“We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who
practice such things. Do you suppose, O man—you who judge
those who practice such things and yet do them yourself—that you
will escape the judgment of God?” (Romans 2:2–3, ESV)
• Why God Is The Judge (2.4-5)
“Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance
and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you
to repentance? But because of your hard and impenitent heart you
are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God’s
righteous judgment will be revealed.” (Romans 2:4–5, ESV)
• This Life Matters (Romans 2.6-11)
• Are You -glorifying?
(Romans 2:7 ESV)

This Week “Actions Have Consequences” Romans 2:1-29
1. What excuses do we give for being judgmental of the people
around us? Why does Paul say, “…you have no excuse…” (2:1)
2. Read James 1:3. What is the warning? What is the danger
teachers face?
3. Verses 2:2-5 center on God bring judgement on people who do
unrighteousness. Why does God have the right to judge people?
4. What is the difference between God’s nature and people’s nature when it comes to judging people’s lives? (see 2:4-5)
5. Read verses 2:7-10. If there is such great reward for doing good,
why do we have such a hard time doing it? Do you think people
really believe how they live their life ultimately makes a difference?
6. Read Dallas Willard’s quote about grace and effort from the
notes. Do you agree or disagree? Why?
“Grace is not opposed to effort, it is opposed to earning. Earning is
an attitude. Effort is an action. Grace, you know, does not just have to
do with forgiveness of sins alone.”― Dallas Willard
7. How do you see evidence of God’s moral law being something
universal that is in people’s hearts?
8. Romans 2:23-24 makes it clear that when we don’t live consistent with our beliefs, it affects us but it also affects God and how
people see God. How is hypocrisy dishonoring to God? How
does it lead to people rejecting God?
9. What are the outward symbols of faith in Jesus that people use
today? What happens when those symbols don’t match their
actions? (2:25-29)
10.What in your life do you need to make Jesus fully the Lord over
so you can honor God and be better at pointing people to the
goodness of God?
